Frequently Asked Questions

How do I clean my tile?

Regular, basic cleaning with warm water and mild soap is sufficient to keep floors looking good. You can also use gentle, everyday multipurpose spray cleaner to remove soap scum, hard water deposits, and mildew. Do not use cleaning products that contain acids or ammonia (and other harsh chemicals) as these can damage grout and glazed surfaces of the tile. Choose products that are compatible with your grout to avoid damage or discoloration of the grout. Always dry your porcelain thoroughly after cleaning.

All natural and manmade tiles should be cleaned routinely with concentrated tile cleaners that have a neutral pH. These cleaners are better suited for removing grease, oils and normal spills.

What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?

The major difference between porcelain tile and ceramic tile is how it’s made. Both tiles are made from a clay mixture that’s fired in a kiln, but porcelain tile is made from more refined clay and it’s fired at higher temperatures. This makes it denser and more durable than ceramic tile. That’s why porcelain tile is more expensive than ceramic tile and generally considered to be higher quality as well.

What tile is best suited for exterior applications?

Porcelain and natural stone are both acceptable for exterior applications. Natural stone can patina and stain due to the fact that it is porous. Porcelain tiles are stronger and non porous which will give you a consistent look for many years.

What type of grout should I use?

The most common grout used is cement based grout. This grout is porous and requires routine sealing. With this grout, some common problems are shade variation, blotching, and cracking.

Premixed is a new technology grout. It is easy to work with and exceptionally stain resistant. This grout requires no additional sealing. This is a great option for DIYers that are not comfortable working with epoxy grout.

Epoxy grout provides superior stain resistance. This grout also features anti-microbial protection to help inhibit the growth of mold and mildew into the grout.
